Consider the Emptiness by M. Drew Williams

Understand that it cannot be
tracked as though it is
a fox print pressed into

a forest trail. Appreciate
the fact that it has no wings
to forcibly pinion for sport,

and does not emit a perfumed
musk for any of the hounds
to frenetically pursue.

Examine it closely and ask
if its blank appearance,
made deeper every night

by the shots you fire into it,
reflects the one which you
awaken with every morning.
