Never lie to a dog.
They remember everything.
The way you smelled when you promised
them a walk at the lake; the way your eyes
shifted in their sockets when you uttered
the words; your hands dipping into the bag
of dogfood for a consolation prize because
you knew when you made the promise that
you really didn’t mean it.
Never think for a minute
that a dog holds a grudge when you
do something for yourself instead of honoring
your promise. Their canine constitution is more
reliable than yours will ever be. They will love you
regardless, even when they don’t get a Whopper Junior
at the Burger King drive-thru.
