Back Stroke by Christine Hamm
In a pink stadium-
sized hall filled
with vomiting
children, I learned
to breathe.
Never
allowing pool
water
above the crown
of my head.
There in the milky
shallows, I floated
in the arms
of someone
else’s mother.
